great story.
but i don’t think i read it at the right moment for me to love this book.
i enjoyed the idea and story and the writing was well done and it all worked.
but for me there were little things that bothered me a lot more than they would have during a more fitting reading time.
for example the little drama moments of the bullying that are not handled well or right even if sadly realistically grinded in my nerves a bit because i just wanted a freaking adult to behave the right way just one freaking time! it’s sadly realistic that a non white (especially) girl can be seen as lesser worthy than someone else but i do wish that of books with this topics also showed that while that exists there are also better people around as well.
not everyone is as prejudices and horrible simply because you are not born white and/or rich and/or male.
or how it seems that basically nobody beside amari seems to care what happens with her apparently so important and loved and well known brother?
or how instead of actually telling the parents of the kids what’s going on and where they are spending the summer and what they are learning they force the kids to lie to their parents from that moment on.
why?
besides to make it more difficult for the few kids not coming from legacies?
there where quite a few moments in this book where it just felt frustrated with… i guess reality?
as i said clearly not the perfect time for me to read this and appreciate the book for what it’s about since i focused on the details around the story too much.
i will revisit this in the near future and see if it’s just not a book series for me or if i just needed be be in a different mood.
instead of trying to stitch together a review that could sound more negative than this book deserves let’s just say:
it’s a great middle great that combines supernatural fantastical elements with real life problems, dramas and issues.
