Out of Character
by Jenna Miller
Another YA that I related too so much!! This book is about a fat, happily out lesbian who loves herself and enjoys online fandom roleplay. It was SO refreshing to see a high school character so sure of herself in some of the ways so many of us were not at that age. This book really tugged on my heartstrings!!
I love how online friendships were portrayed in this book and how big of a role they played in the main character Cass’s life. Cass was able to take a fandom she was passionate about, get into roleplaying within that fandom as a hobby, and make best friends from it. The love of nerdy stuff was just so relatable!!
I loved Cass’s relationship with her dad and her neighbor BFF. I just felt the closeness and love between them, it is great. I really loved that all of these people in her life loved her without her size ever being brought up. So refreshing for a high school story!!
I have mixed feelings about lying/miscommunication tropes, but thought it was really well done in this book! Definitely recommend for my YA readers. The fat and lesbian rep is so well done!!
