The Hard Tomorrow
by Eleanor Davis
Unfortunately, this graphic novel takes incrediblely vital topics like social justice, fascism, police states, etc. and does a completely surface level attempt at showing the depth that people fighting the good fight go through. I think it ultimately does a disservice to the conversation as it adds nothing new. The storytelling it self is disjointed, as it hops from one subplot to the next without a sense of conclusion. There are examples where this method works and add dimensions to the plot, but since this is a such a shallow take, it just feels like each subplot is underdeveloped and felt hanging. Almost feels as if, we the reader, is supposed just assume the obvious follows with the characters being flat and two dimensional. But, if I'm reading a book to feel pushed to dig deeper into social justice or humanize fighting for social justice (as I assume this book wants us too), then leaving it shallow and open doesn't push anyone to grow. And without a push to grow, what is the point of this particular story?
