I have a conflicting enjoyment of Carlos' character. I'm not sure why I like him and not other more "positive" male characters in urban fantasy (like Rick, from the Jane Yellowrock series). Maybe it's because he's upfront about what a horrible person (humanoid, whichever) he is. Honesty has to count for something, right?

I really loved the psychological element to this plotline - I did not know about the Philip experiments prior to reading Poltergeist. I was inspired to look it up and probably spent just as much time researching it and related items as I did reading this novel.
