The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw
5.0

« The sisters have all found bodies.” The words seem pulled from my throat. The quiet settles between each of my ribs, it expands my lungs, it reminds me of what’s to come. “They’ve all returned.” I close my eyes, focusing on the silence. It’s the fastest it’s ever happened before. Now the drowning will begin.

I won’t go too far because the spoilers could be easy with this. THE WICKED DEEP tells the compelling story of a cursed city. Since 1822, Sparrow has seen its summer fell under the Swan sisters’ curse. Every summer, citizens and tourists keep finding boys’ lifeless bodies on the shore. But this summer is different: a new boy is in town. Someone who doesn’t know about the curse.

I fell in love with the book as soon as I read the first page. Ernshaw has a way of writing prose that makes you feel it. I felt my heart racing, I kept turning pages because I NEEDED to. I needed to know more, to dive deeper into the plot. I had pretty much found the plot twist but it was so much more rich and complex that the premisses I had guessed.

I must bow in front of Shae Ernshaw’s power of creating an atmosphere. The description were on point, not too many of them either, just enough so you could imagine yourself in Sparrow. The details, the parsimonious clues she planted along her story, all of those made a rich story, full of layers.

The characters were really interesting too. Part of the fun in reading this boon was to try and find which of the characters had been taken by the Swan sisters. That added a layer to the characters that made them complex and richer.

The constant flashbacks and explanations about the sisters and the 1822-Sparrow were very welcomed to! It definitely added context and essential informations. Plus, it gives us the opportunity to know the sisters as themselves and not through another character.

aaaaaalso, can we talk about the ending??? It was perfect, and such a great explanation for the insta-love thingie happening there, that might make some of you cringe. All I want to say is: work through it, it’ll be worth it at the end!

Overall, one might say I’ve been bewitched by this book. Don’t be afraid, let it take you away, go with the flow, for the sea might have more powers than we imagined.
