The Mistletoe Bet
by Maren Moore
Okay this one cleared the air a bit after a terrible novella and a quick DNF right after it. Short and sweet and spicy, this is a friends to lovers (technically brother's best friend but they were all friends growing up) story about the career driven, Christmas hating marketing executive gal from NYC who goes back to her small town and makes a bet with the Christmas guy that he can't make her love the holidays again. And then they end up in bed, a lot. It was fine and maybe would have DNF'd if it was full length because of some ableist word/phrase choices (used as unfortunate everyday language) but it was cute and I think seemed better than it was in comparison to the last two. I'd probably try reading something else by the author.
Reread update: I'm not sure what I was dealing with last year because I enjoyed this one just fine this year and if I was still doing star ratings it would get bumped up for sure. There was one word that is considered ableist but isn't a slur (as far as I know), but that was the only one I noticed and it wasn't directed at a human so it didn't bug me as much this time (would I have preferred a different word? Yes). Otherwise, it's a cute childhood friends slash brother's best friend where he tries to convince her to love Christmas again. I reread it because there's a second one and soon a third one and I have read more from this author and really enjoyed it so I want to read these now too. Plus they're novellas and short.
