28/05/19: On my second reading of this, I was quite shocked by the racist portrayal of one of the characters. This wasn't so obvious to me the first time, but this time I found it very difficult to see past this. The author's description of the character himself are ludicrous and cannot be put down to 'attitudes at the time'.
