The Hazel Wood
by Melissa Albert
3.5/5
Overall, not too bad.
It was definitely a unique story with an entertaining and creepy plot. However, I thought the writing could be a little weird at times. The author kept using “phrases” I was totally unfamiliar with that did not help in her description at all. I thought the buildup to the Hazel Wood and the Hinterlands took too long and not enough of the story took place there. And I wasn’t a huge fan of the main character for most of the book because of how nasty she always was, although that gets explained later in the book. I also would have liked to learn more about the stories in the Hinterland and we don’t get to hear too much about them.
I feel like I’ve done more complaining so far but it was a decent read. I got through it really quickly because it does hold your attention and the world she built is actually very interesting to read about.
