abbie_ 's review for:
Little Fires Everywhere
by Celeste Ng
Previous to reading Celeste Ng’s Little Fires Everywhere, I had seen multiple rave reviews but somehow remained fairly ignorant of the plot itself. I’m going to maintain this secrecy as I think it’s best for readers to unravel this one themselves, but I will say that Ng tackles serious and multifaceted topics such as motherhood, identity, adoption and abortion with huge skill!
.
It was maybe unsurprising that I loved it so much, since I discovered last year that family dramas and sagas are indeed ~my thing~. But this is in a class of its own: multilayered, complex storylines that overlap and then come together, each character with their own distinct voice, issues, desires.
.
I loved the way art was woven into the storyline, too. Photography was one of my favourite mediums when I did art at A-level and obviously still plays a huge role in my life now in the form of my bookstagram! So I loved reading about Mia, her struggle through art school, her processes and inspirations. This book just has so much to offer!
.
I feel truly elated that I picked this book for my first read of the year, although it might have set the bar too high, ha! Hopefully it’s just setting a precedence for a year of stunning reads!
