Skyward
by Brandon Sanderson
The best YA Sanderson book I've read yet. A generally likeable main character, who appears to undergo some personal growth, a couple of memorable sidekicks, and a bit of wish-fulfillment. Like many books for or about younger people that I've read (all the Potters, the Hunger Games, and so on), the adults don't seem to act like adults to me, but this example is no worse than most. And maybe this is just how teens see adults, and the whole slew of these books are a triumph.
Anyhow. Compulsively readable, if only to see what happens next. The magic system is implemented using handheld and starfighter-mounted technology, but otherwise seems a lot like Lurching, so I expect Sanderson will continue to make good use of it. There are a number of mysteries set up in the book and partially resolved, while adding more, so it seems like we'll want to keep reading for a while.
