The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
by C.S. Lewis
I'm never really sure how to reconcile the nostalgia I have for certain books with more current readings. Now, I find that the Narnia books are...old. They're sexist and xenophobic and paced poorly, and yet I remember my parents reading them aloud to me and treasuring the time together. My younger sister and I would climb into my parents' big bed and all four of us would cuddle up together and read a chapter or two of whatever Narnia book we were on at the time. I remember loving the movies when they came out -- my sister looks eerily similar to the actress who plays Lucy, so I would always insist, as the older sister, that I must then look like Susan (which I don't). So I can't actually bring myself to rate this the way I would if I were just reading it now for the first time, but I guess there's nothing wrong with that. Our experiences of books are always heavily influenced by the context in which we read them.
