rozarka 's review for:
The Hourglass Throne
by K.D. Edwards
I don't know how to review this book. Yes, I could list some of its flaws (one of them being a too soft magic system—it's too bendable to be able to predict whether rules set at one point are going to apply later or be broken to advance the story), but I don't want to. This book is... everything I wanted from the author and more.
It's a book series for character-driven readers (= my humble self); you gain a new family that lives in your head forever. I love how the emphasis is on love between the characters, but it's not a romantic type that steals the show. I can't list all the impactful scenes and interactions here, it would be too long, but be sure I'm going to annotate and bookmark all of them when my physical copy arrives. And reread the first two books (now I crave to have all the short stories in paperback format as well...).
Plot-wise, it was better structured than the first book. I did not binge-read it like other online people I'd seen commenting on the book, I didn't have enough time and mental space, but I never felt lost or confused and I never lost interest in the story. The author did the unspeakable thing I'm not going to elaborate on because of spoiler reasons, and my first reaction was to send him a video of me burning the book. Then I read through the aftermath and felt... Content? Calmed? Understanding? (with a friend on a phone to rant to, of course) The author handled the situation so well that even I, a hardcore fan of *censored*, felt like it happened the best way it could.
I'm babbling. What I want to say is that it's not a series without some flaws, but I don't give a shit. I love all the characters and want to read about them forever. 9 books in total? Make it 90, I'm here for it.
