The Song of Achilles
by Madeline Miller
The Song of Achilles chooses to reinterpret the relationship between Patroclus and Achilles as a romantic one in the best way. Told from Patroclus' POV, he takes us through his life from the early age of 5 up to the Trojan War, and the bond he develops with Achilles from the time he's 10. Miller's beautiful writing, spectacular attention to detail (as a Greek and a nerd I really appreciated her taking the time to explain how an offhand English phrase could have a much more important impact when told in Ancient Greek) bring to like this heart wrenching tale in a way that I found quite refreshing.
I readily, it's been a very long time since I've read a book that had such a profound effect on me, and I recommend it to any masochistic nerd with a love for Ancient Greek mythology.
