The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
5.0

This is straight up a vibe.

Yes, I've seen the show. Twice. And I'm obsessed with it.
But, this review is not about the show or me comparing this book to the show (don't judge me, I know this book's a classic. But the show is really good and I didn't read this before I watched that). Anyway let's move on.

I LOVED this book. I love the idea of Hill House, a crooked building with odd blue print and doors that always stay closed. The progression of the story from the outer world, the city to a small country side, to this dank, awful house and the feeling, this odd little feeling that whatever Eleanor is telling us about the house might not be the truth. I love that this feels speculative too. Did Eleanor lose her mind in the process of taking care of her mother and when she arrived at Hill House she was already not mentally sound? It was 11 years of being a caretaker to your very sick mother after all, imagine what that'll do to a person. OR did the house cause her to unravel? We'll never know.
I also love how cozy this book felt. Is that odd? It's horror but lo-fi in the best way.
All in all, I enjoyed the writing and I had a good, jolly time with this book. 5/5
