I love this book. I love Guy Branum. That's all you need to know.
Ok, maybe it's not all you need to know. First off, let me say that this book is a work of art. Branum perfectly marries memoir with cultural criticism in a way I didn't know was possible. Yes, I loved learning about Branum's upbringing and his time in Hollywood, but more than anything I enjoyed his wit.
Prior to listening to the audiobook (which I highly recommend), I knew that Branum was smart. I had heard him on the 100th episode of "My Favorite Murder" and thoroughly enjoyed his lessons to Karen and Georgia on the law (as it pertained to their podcast and their incorrect usage of several legal terms). But I didn't know just how intelligent he was until reading (listening to) his book. This man has encyclopedic knowledge AND intellect that dazzles. I'm still reeling from a close reading of "Bohemian Rhapsody" where Branum analyzes the song as a son's coming out story to his mother.
This is my ideal book: delightfully crafted story, pop culture, and thought-provoking probes. If you wanted a strictly joke on joke on joke book, this isn't the one for you. But if you want to gain a little more insight and appreciation for a man who has worked his ass off to get where he is, learn a whole bunch about a wide variety of topics (from the agriculture of Sutter County, California to the goddess Durga), and laugh your own ass off in the process, GET THIS BOOK! (You know I enjoyed a book when after listening to the audio version, I run to Amazon to buy a physical copy).
Now, someone please get this man another book deal so I can keep learning and cackling until I cry!
