“She was smart enough to want more but tired enough to accept the way things were.”

Difficult Women was wow... It left me in awe of Gay and her writing. All of the stories left me reeling and inspired by Gay's artful writing. This collection of stories are hard-hitting and cover a manner of hard topics- rape, lost of children, and child abuse. Difficult Women had all character-driven stories which, personally, are my favourite. The humorous thing is the title " Difficult Women" is what the patriarchal world would label these women but in reality, they were just dealing with the world in the way only women would be able to understand or know how to navigate it.

I was able to buddy with one of my bookstagram friends and the discussions we had caused me to see small, subtle things I missed in some of the stories. All of the stories are multi-layered and might need a few reads to pick up on all the subtle themes. Difficult Women would be a great book for a book club. Overall the stories were gritty with reality and twisted with the truth. The emotions Difficult Women invoked in me were unmatched and this book is one of my favourites of 2021 so far.
