Summary
The Ashes and the Star Cursed King is the second installment in the Crowns of Nyaxia series and the conclusion of the Nightborn Duet. The story picks up where the first book left off, with Oraya reeling from the aftermath of the Kejari and struggling to come to terms with the secrets and lies that have been revealed. As she navigates the treacherous world of vampire politics, Oraya must make difficult choices and form unlikely alliances in order to reclaim her kingdom and seek vengeance against those who have wronged her.
Characters
Oraya is a complex and multifaceted protagonist, whose character development continues to shine in this installment. Her strength, resilience, and determination are inspiring, and her vulnerabilities and doubts make her relatable and human. Raihn, the Star-Cursed King, is equally well-crafted, with a rich backstory and motivations that add depth to the story.
Trigger Warnings
This novel contains mature themes, including violence, bloodshed, betrayal, and emotional abuse. However, these elements are not gratuitous and serve to advance the plot and character development.
Favorite Quotes
"The king knew, in this moment, that his greatest love would also be his ruination, and that both would come in the unlikely form of a young human woman.”
“It was all her. Deadly and stunning. Even her hatred was fucking beautiful.”
Overall Review
The Ashes and the Star Cursed King is a phenomenal read that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Carissa Broadbent's writing is masterful, weaving together a complex and suspenseful plot with deep character development. The world-building is rich and immersive, and the themes of power, loyalty, and redemption are expertly explored. My only reason for not giving it a full 5 stars is that the pacing felt a bit slow in some places, and some plot twists felt slightly predictable. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this novel to fans of young adult fantasy, vampire fiction, and strong female protagonists. Rating: 4.5/5 stars.
