Get a Grip, Vivy Cohen!
by Sarah Kapit
I enjoyed this! #ownvoices autism rep. Relateable, realistic main character. Unique writing and form (this book is told in epistolary style!). Engaging plot.
The only thing I have to say negatively was in regards to Vivy seeming to think that it was bad to stim? She kept expecting to be punished for hand/finger flapping or rocking when she was excited/upset. And though we don’t see her punished for that, the way she talked about expecting it made it sound like that had happened before. And it was never made clear that it was wrong of her mom and therapist to punish her for harmless stims.
Vivy also had some destructive stims, and I fully understand the need to redirect and correct those, but I wasn’t a fan of how the book handled her harmless stims. I don’t know if the book meant to make it out like stimming is bad, but that’s how it ended up coming off to me at times.
