Faustian bargains, violinists, and queer alien courtship over fresh-made donuts? What more could you ask for. This is a story about strength, love, family, and acceptance. The story follows Shizuka Satomi, a talented violinist who made a deal with the devil: deliver seven souls of other violin prodigies to trade their souls for success and in turn she will have her own music and success back... she’s already delivered six and she is searching for the final last one. Cue, Katrina Nguyen, a young transgender runaway who loves the violin but has had no training or teacher, and is currently getting out of a difficult family situation. Katrina just wants to survive, to be accepted for themself, and to be able to live as their chosen identity. The only thing that Katrina has that she values above everything else is her beloved violin so when she plays at the park she catches the eye of Satomi... and in that instant Satomi knows she’s finally found her last soul... except the more time Satomi spends training and caring for Katrina the more she comes to love her and the more difficult her decision of sacrificing Katrina becomes. Then there is also the donut shop that Satomi frequents, run by a beautiful donut lady named Lan Tran, a retired starship captain, intersteller refugee, and mother of four. Lan herself is on the run, slowly spending time rebuilding her spaceship, did I forget to mention, she’s an alien? Lan and Satomi instantly hit it off and soon find themselves going out on cute coffee dates and park dates, but both of them have their own struggles to deal with and people they are both responsible for. Three lives of three women become entangled, each of them searching for a way to survive, and a family of their own and acceptance for who they are. This was an absolutely fabulous and heart warming story. I was instantly hooked and I ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. The struggles of these characters are relatable and their strength and love for those they care about was so endearing. If you love stories with deals with demons, music, romance, and wonderful representation then this one is for you!
