The Bluest Eye
by Toni Morrison
"Beauty was not simply something to behold; it was something one could do.”

OMG my heart literally broke reading this book. Toni Morrison is an amazing, astounding author and this is only the first book I've read by her; I am blown away. I was drawn to read this one first because it takes place in Lorain, Ohio, which is about 30min away from me and also where Toni Morrison grew up. This book has multiple viewpoints, which I love but a lot of the story is told from Claudia's perspective and how she observes the world, her friends, family, etc. Claudia has a friend named Pecola who believes and is told that she is ugly because of her dark skin and woolly hair and wishes for pretty blue eyes and blond hair like white people. She desperately wants to feel beautiful and be loved. This book tells the sad story of Pecola and her experiences all throughout her life. I loved this book, even though it broke my heart, I loved how Toni wrote this book, had me hooked from the first page. If you've never read a Toni Morrison book, I recommend you start with this one; it's her first novel and it is WELL DONE.
