The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
4.0

Metamorphosis is the story of a man who wakes up from his sleep to find that he has transformed into 'a big monstrous bug'. This is a novella with three chapters. There is not much of a twist or anything. It was a plain ordinary story of a man which becomes absurd slowly. It was more of a story that spoke about human existence and alienation in the modern society. I couldn't think of the protagonist as anything but a schizophrenic patient who goes through his difficult days in a conservative family blaming himself for what he is going through and also blamed by others too in the family who in turn cares about nothing but the society.

And it was so bad that even after working hard all his youth and being a very useful person in the family, once he became someone like who can no longer contribute his part to the family both socially and financially, they started losing interest in him. And it was so clear that it wasn't his fault that he became a bug.

The saddest part about the whole story was that right from the beginning till the end he never once taught about how he changed like this or how to become normal. All he thought and worried about was his family. What they will think of him. How they will manage the situation. and What he can do to help them somehow. But they hardly tried to help him out. Even though he was transformed into something out of the ordinary, he was still their son. They were supposed to accept him for who he was. They clearly failed doing that.

This book is such an eye opener. I would recommend everyone to read it. Kafka has done really a good work here. If you have studied about his life, you will find that this work says more about his own life.
