As always, Louise Penny hooks you in. In this case, she did it from the very first page.

Inspector Gamache is in Quebec staying with his former chief. We know something bad has happened. Gamache and his team have been through something that has put Jean-Guy and the Chief Inspector out of commission.

While on leave, Gamache is doing research in a library in Quebec. While visiting, a murder occurs.

At the same time, Jean-Guy is back in Three Pines, reviewing the case from The Brutal Telling.

In between all of this, we slowly get snippets of what happened that day. What caused Inspector Gamache to be on leave.

All of the mysteries and questions are answered by the end of the book wonderfully. Penny keeps you guessing and interested in all three plots. I couldn't put this one down!
