I think a lot of the appeal of this book is lost nowadays because of how oversaturated the pirate genre has been the last decade or so. Everybody knows what's going on because the tropes used in the book are known now, but when this book came out they weren't. Nevertheless listening to the audiobook was quite the experience, despite the fact that I spent the whole book rooting for the pirates.
