A Power Unbound by Freya Marske
4.5

After finding A Restless Truth somewhat underwhelming I'm delighted to say that I really enjoyed A Power Unbound. While A Marvellous Light remains my favourite of the trilogy, this was still an excellent way to start the year's reading.

I have loved Jack since book one so it was nice to finally get a book revolving around him. The other main character Alan was unfortunately a harder sell for me. I vaguely disliked him on his introduction in the second book, and it took some time into book three for me to really come to care about him. Thankfully I did get there, though his relationship with Jack will likely never feel as perfect to me as Robin and Edwin in book one. Part of that may be because the romance here felt a little too much based on sex (though at least the sex scenes weren't boring).

The plot was again a strength of the book, and the overall arc of the trilogy came to a very satisfying conclusion. I did note some hints that perhaps Marske may be planning to return to this world in future, which I would definitely not be opposed to.
