The Justice of Kings by Richard Swan
4.5

I really liked The Justice of Kings. It combines a number of things I really enjoy in a book but don't often see together - murder mystery, legal drama, politics, fantasy, battle scenes, and a slowly developing wider conflict.

It surprised me to discover that the first person narrator is not the Justice named in the blurb, but rather his clerk Helena (19 years old during the events of the story, though apparently an old woman when telling it). At first I found the choice odd, but as the book continued the reason became apparent and I did really like her. She does have moments of acting like a teenager, and her romance definitely feels that way (she is head over heels minutes after meeting her love interest, which is a little irritating) but this is in no way a YA book and I suspect we are going to see her mature a lot over the course of the sequels.

I suspect this book won't be for everyone, it's quite slow paced and has a different feel to most high fantasy. I do highly recommend it though and I'll be eagerly awaiting the sequel.
