Monkey Prince by Gene Luen Yang
3.0

The supporting cast is pretty generic and I wasn’t a fan of another new hero getting their start in Gotham, but when the story focuses on the main character and his struggles with anxiety the book is really good! The art team does a great job balancing the intensity and the humor of the action (something rather difficulty when one of Monkey Prince’s superpowers involves repeatedly getting chopped in half) and I have to salute Yang got seamlessly integrating the mythology of Journey to the West into the DC Universe. That’s a tough feat given the density of the material and how many cultural pantheons are already at play in DC Comics, but Yang makes it look easy.

Apparently there’s another 6 issues of this series so the book ends rather abruptly, but Monkey Prince engaging with Atlantis is already waaaaay more interesting to me than anything they did in Gotham City. Definitely going to read the next volume.
