Her resilience and wit make her an instantly likable character, and her chemistry with the grumpy yet deeply loyal Captain Nathan Griffith is electric. Griff is the quintessential Army captain—tough on the outside but layered with a depth of emotion that makes you root for him from the first page. Their banter is sharp, their pranks are hilarious, and the slow burn of their romance is steamy yet tender.

Gates doesn’t shy away from the harsh realities of life in a war zone, but she balances it perfectly with moments of levity and hope. The bond between the soldiers of Company B feels authentic and raw, a testament to Gates’s skill in capturing the brotherhood of the military.
