Her Body and Other Parties
by Carmen Maria Machado
I really enjoyed this read. I have never read anything like it. If you like "Black Mirror", "Love, Sex, & Robots", "The Twilight Zone"- both versions, and thrillers with actual substance than this may be the book for you . It has sexual content and gory aspects but other than that suitable for 16+.
CH. 1 the husband stitch
High sexual situations. Some women may be able to relate to the main protagonist. The ribbon symbolizes our scar that we hide or can't hide. How we sometimes can never be our own. Something to break...to touch. Without permission. Solely my opinion. Clif hanger like ost of the stories. Bicurious/Bisexual small part. Graphic gor of birth with mysoginistic behavior by most characters.
Ch. 2 inventory
Showing the fluidity of sexual desire and an end of the world complex where human contact seemingly leads to death/ solidarity. Morbid but seemingly realistic human behavior.
ch.3 Mothers
The most confusing in the beginning. But shows mental health issues in a new way. Flashing back between present, past and future.
ch.4 Especially heinous
I have never watched law and order as it premieres only reruns. One of the longest and harder to stay awake through. Interesting plot and keeps you guessing. Hard to remember that the titles to each section relates to the scene. A "happy ending" lots of supernatural occurences. Regardless enjoyable. Murder, dopplegangers and sexual fluidity.
ch.5 real women have bodies
Sweet beginning and a bitter end. Similar to "Inventory" End of the world but for women seemingly. New love ends too soon. Lesbian romance and tragedies for Women and Men - loss of mothers, sisters, wives, daughters, friends, and the inability to feel.
ch.6 eight bites
Warning***Negative body Image in story. Shows the pain that comes from lack of self love and many things. From Food, body, surgeries, and many dark things. That women are more likely to experience along with some men. Each sister is a representative of Hate, love, joy, and jealousy.\
ch.7 the resident
My least favorite not much to say about it . Involves sex and childhood trauma.
ch.8 difficult at parties
Warning*** Rape and sexual assualt references. Sad realistic writing of trauma, and the effects of handling it n egatively or without help.
Overall, I enjoyed it.
