The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening
by L.J. Smith
⚠️ Trigger Warnings - Attempted Rape, and Violence (obviously cause like vampires)
So I read this book once back in the 5th grade (probably) because of my obsession with TVD, and from what I remember, I loved it. Of course I was a 5th grader and didn’t understand the difference between a good book and a bad book.
This is the book that the acclaimed ‘The Vampire Diaries’ show was made from, and I wanted to reread this book to see if I still liked it as much as my 10 year old self did. Alas, past me, I did not.
I’m sure we all know what TVD is about. It’s about a girl called Elena Gilbert who just lost her parents and is now dealing with the loss and her stupid teenage brother Jeremy, while being under the care of her Aunt Jenna. She meets a boy called Stefan Salvatore but he has a mighty secret.
That’s basically the book too but a few different changes. Elena is blonde, super popular, and lost her parents a few years before the book starts. She has a younger sister whose about 5 or 6 named Mellisa (I think?) and her Aunt is called something else. Everything else is pretty similar.
But what I didn’t like about this book was the girl on girl hate between Caroline and Elena. In the show their best friends, and in the book they are literally mortal enemies and I think the words ‘slut’ are used.
And the way Elena and Stefan fell in love, is not passing the vibe check. First they’ve talked to each other like 2 or 3 times and then they are like “I love you Stefan” and “oh Elena I love you too” like I understand the book was written in the 80s or early 90s but yikes.
And I hate Damon in the books too. Plus their is also attempted r@pe in here and I wasn’t given a trigger warning so
