tetromino 's review for:
I'll Be the One
by Lyla Lee
medium-paced
So, like, despite what my Storygraph history suggests, I am actually not a 13 year old I am an adult so this was def not targeted towards me and I am VERY aware of it so I will be grading it with that in mind. I am, however, definitely aware and somewhat knowledgeable about Kpop (in a very 'your dad who knows about Football' kind of way). So this was definitely super funny to read and I love books where I feel reason to screenshot the page and send it to my sister.
The way it handles issues is heavy-handed, which is the main problem. The issues it tackles are legit and worth talking about, and I do agree with the author's stance, it just always felt like I was reading the author's inner monologue about these issues instead of the character's. On the other hand, the scene in which Henry tells Skye that he broke up with Melinda because she was a fetishistic koreaboo was both a salient piece of commentary about the problematic idea that another culture is superior to yours is actually racist and problematic in and of itself because it still positions cultures as something that can be weighed in value but also I must admit there was something very funny about a girl breaking up with her super hot influencer chaebol boyfriend because he can't sing and dance!? GIRL GET OUTTA THE WAY, IMMA GET IN THERE THEN!!!!! (jk I do not want to date a teen)
I definitely liked the main character, Skye, and honestly we DO be needing more fat kpop girlies!! Literally all we have is Swan and to call her fat would be a lie! I guess Shindong from SJ but he seems like a real fucker who doesn't like fat women so like....okay...SO I'M HERE FOR FAT KPOP STAR GIRLIE EMPOWERMENT!!
Henry was funny cause I cannot imagine just performing 'Cherry Bomb' alone on a stage. He loses point for having his HUSKY off-leash in a park, like breh, please stop killing the local rabbit population if you can. Judging this teenager big-time for being an idiot.
Like it's fine! Easy YA read, nothing groundbreaking but does everything need to be? Solid is just that, solid. Imani best character ever for just going out there and performing fuckin CACTUS by A.C.E. I hope she wore the shorts!!
