The Henna Wars
by Adiba Jaigirdar
This is a really cute slice of life story set in Ireland. Our main character, Nishat, is a Bengali teen who is on the verge of coming out to her family. She has support from her younger sister Priti (and honestly, their sister relationship is one of my favorite things about the book.) Her life slowly gets thrown for a loop when Flavia, a friend from childhood who might become something more. Both of them are in a business class, and both choose a henna business as their project. Will their potential romance survive the competition?
This book touches on a lot of things--coming out, being outed, cultural appropriation, changing friendships, what racism is. While not minimizing the pain, Jaigirdar does a deft job of keeping the story relatively light feeling. This story is also pretty chaste, so you could give it to a middle schooler who is reading up and it would be fine. I really enjoyed it.
