I started reading this since I am working in social care this summer and got incredibly frustrated with the lack of information in the area, especially with regards to foster children’s medical and dental health. While this book didn’t clear up any of my original questions, namely the blatant lack of accountability of the state or the resource parent in the children’s medical health, it did help create a sense of the structure and history of foster care in America. The personal stories are touching, if heartbreaking, and the author marks clear grounds on what foster care can and can’t provide, the burdens placed on it and possible alternate structures. A stirring read.
