I randomly followed this historian on Twitter, which is how I discovered this book. I got this on Audible, and listened to it the past couple of nights. Medicine was GRIM back in the 1800s. I knew that from reading Civil War books, but this book really went into detail about how unsanitary things were. I had never heard of Joseph Lister until this book, which is unfortunate because he did a lot of work and came up with a lot of processes that improved medicine. A lot of his methods are in use today in various ways. This was a really informative book. She really did her research on this, and she really painted a picture of how gross surgical procedures and hospitals were during this time period. You could almost smell the filth.
