The Dangers of Smoking in Bed by Mariana Enríquez

2.0

I read this book early on in my Bookstagram journey, and it came highly recommended. When I finished it and didn't like it/had concerns about it, I felt pressured to keep those to myself being new to Booksta and with how much everyone loved it. I've just DNFed Enriquez's newest collection, A Sunny Place for Shady People, for the same reasons I disliked this one: first of all, I just don't really enjoy the stories; I find a lot of them boring. But more importantly, there's a lot of fatphobia, ableism, and some transphobia. It's been too long since I've read this to give you specifics, but my sweet friend Lanelle has provided many of them in her review: https://app.thestorygraph.com/reviews/e243fc34-192c-494b-a9a0-773020f1507c.

TLDR: I'm not sure if the problem is Mariana or her translator, but she uses a lot of problematic language, and I'm not here for it. Overhyped.
