isabookabel 's review for:
Rivers of London
by Ben Aaronovitch
This book had the potential to be really fast-paced and fun. Instead, I actually cringed so much that I was physically uncomfortable and couldn't take the book seriously. Every single woman is sexualised from the word go - the only exception is the supervisor, who he describes as a 'terrifying lesbian'. I also felt uncomfortable with how the book talked about race, as the author themselves is white. It felt like the book was filled with casual racism and also constant references to race, which felt bizarre and unnecessary. The writing was clunky and lacked any form of subtlety - the creepy male gaze made my skin crawl.
