The Favorites
by Layne Fargo
I highly recommend experiencing this one on audio! The full cast narration takes the story to another level, making it even more immersive and gripping. The documentary style format, told through interviews, different perspectives, and shifting voices, reminded me so much of Daisy Jones & The Six, but with the intensity and passion of elite figure skating.
Katarina Shaw and Heath Rocha’s story is obsessive, toxic, magnetic, and completely unputdownable. Their chemistry—both on and off the ice—is the kind that burns through the pages, fueled by ambition, love, and deep seated wounds neither can truly escape. Fargo masterfully weaves together past and present, unraveling the scandal, heartbreak, and raw emotions that defined their careers and personal lives.
The buildup to the “shocking incident” that ended their partnership kept me on edge, and when it all unraveled… wow. The blend of sports drama, intense romance, and emotional depth made this such a standout read. Plus, the Wuthering Heights inspiration? Chef’s kiss. If you love messy, complicated relationships where love and destruction go hand in hand, The Favorites is a must read (or better yet, a must listen).
🔥 Perfect for fans of:
Figure skating & sports romances
Documentary/interview style storytelling (Daisy Jones & The Six vibes!)
Emotionally intense, passionate love stories
The fine line between love and obsession
This one lingers. I’m still thinking about it. 🖤⛸️
