This historical etched fantasy was poignant, serious and entertaining. The story was rich in undertones, characterization, racial discrimination, culture and history of NY during that time. I wanted to cry for the limitations of my fellow black people and I can understand how anything to not be oppressed like that can be tempting. That opens the door for the manipulation expressed in the book. Underestimation is all too real. I felt the police handling of Tom's father was all too real of the realities of today with black men.
