The Empty Throne by Bernard Cornwell
5.0

This is the eighth in Bernard Cornwell’s popular Saxon Tales sagas and his fine writing and storytelling continues. Pagan Lord Uhtred is again the centerpiece of this 10th Century setting in what will someday become England. With Viking raiders out of Ireland threatening the country and infighting over the empty throne of Mercia, how will Uhtred help the king’s widow be accepted as a ruler with no legitimate heir in sight? Cornwell puts together all the elements of a good story with palace intrigue, treachery and authentic battle scenes. I listened to the book on CD in addition to reading the print copy. Much to be liked. Five stars.
