Fruit of the Dead by Rachel Lyon
dark
reflective
fast-paced
- Plot- or character-driven? A mix
- Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

Was a bit hesitant that because it was a modern retelling of a greek myth it would be cheesy, but was so delighted by this one! It’s grimy and dark and written very well. The pacing, dialogue, and even dual perspective (which typically isn’t for me) very well done here (one is third and one is first.)
Cory is a lanky, adrift teen who winds up as the live in nanny to a big pharma CEO for the summer. She’s really endearing (she reminded me a lot of myself haha) and lost! Her mom is also an executive and realizes when Cory doesn’t come home that she must find her daughter. I think the parallels worked really well, it was super atmospheric, and even if you never picked up on the myth retelling you’d fall into this one.
