4:50 from Paddington by Agatha Christie
4.25

This was the first Agatha Christie book I've read (though I've seen many screen adaptations) and I really enjoyed it. The mystery was intriguing and I really liked the writing style and characters. Considering that it is a Miss Marple book, it's interesting how rarely she actually appeared, though she is key to solving the crime.

I suspect this is not one of Christie's very best novels. While the denouement is perfectly fine - the identity of the murderer and their motive made complete sense to me - it also felt a little bit unsatisfying, I'm not sure why. Overall I think this book just needed a little something more to make it great instead of simply very good, but I still really enjoyed reading it.

The introduction to the book (by Robert Barnard) says that Christie "knew precisely how a book would be read, what assumptions a reader would make faced with certain data, what they could be relied on to miss". I felt this very strongly reading the book, and I'm really looking forward to reading more of her work.
