The Glass Castle
by Jeannette Walls
read for Popsugar 2017 advanced challenge: a book with an eccentric character
I really loved Jeannette's style of writing, and I was so drawn in on how she described growing up. There were such perfect details that literally made my draw drop on multiple occasions. I did have some difficulty with sexual assault in the book. While it's clear Jeannette knew the line of right and wrong, I really couldn't get over her parents' flippant responses towards it. It made my stomach churn that her mother could so easily shrug off Jeannette being groped by her uncle. When it comes to her father, it's pretty clear he was assaulted by his own mother and was thus a victim and clearly never dealt with those ramifications. But they didn't do anything to protect their children from that. It made it really hard for me to be sympathetic towards her parents in the final third of the book.
