A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Rum

#bookrecommendation A Woman Is No Man.

"Learn this now, dear. If you live your life waiting for a man’s love, you’ll be disappointed." - Etaf Rum.

I'm not sure about how well I can write a review for this glorious book but I know that I must. Finished this in two sittings but let it not fool you that it's a small book. A woman is no man is about the lives of three women interwoven over time as they face the misogynystic world. Fardeena, Isra and Deya, separated by generations narrate their stories about Palestinian families back in the '70s, '90s and early 2000. This novel made me shiver as I read the fates of all the women who entrusted their lives into the hands of their husbands only to realise how unwise it was to do so.

A young Isra is married off to Adam who lives in America with his family. When she moves to the an unknown country with hopes of love and future, she's disappointed time and again in her in-laws treatment towards her. Fardeena, her mother-in-law is a crude woman who learnt ways of the world very quickly. Deya, Isra's daughter contemplates over her mother's death when she grows old enough to question things. Isra and Adam's death are hidden from their children while Deya starts noticing that something is fishy. This book revolves around women while revealing to the readers about how they were treated with violence. The ignorance about how women were blamed to have given birth to daughters, how they were confined to the kitchen and were not allowed to study, how their duties were to serve their men was so hurtful to read.

The important thing this book stresses on is the fact that everyone has a choice to change their fate and how it is gravely needed for women to stand up and voice their rights. The character development is done splendidly while they carried out their roles without a flaw. There was not a single moment that I felt distracted while reading. The language is beautiful. The Palestinian culture is described in detail.
