The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin
5.0
funny reflective fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

An incredibly built urban fantasy world in which the souls of NYC are representative of the myriad of people who make up the city. Jemisin's writing is essentially flawless: a blend of humorous, atmospheric, accessible, and smooth. Her characters are distinct in their personalities, and even though it is told in 3rd-person, it was always easy to tell whose point of view we were seeing the story from based on how that particular section was written. There is no syndrome of info-dumpy-ness; instead, Jemisin leaves enough unanswered that you are hungry to keep going, but also tells you enough in moments so that you are not frustratingly confused and flustered. I found myself actively engaged with this story, trying to figure out how everything connected and making my own connections along with our protagonists. This can serve as either a great introduction to the work of N.K. Jemisin or as further solidification of one as a Jemisin forever fan. I am excited for the next book in this series!
