Ander & Santi Were Here
by Jonny Garza Villa
This story wrecked me. It was a beautiful but sad, hopeful but frustrating, inspiring but defeating, yet also heartwarming read. There were definitely tears at a few point during my read, and that “rock in my gut” feeling that can only be a tiny portion of what those those actually in danger of being taken by ICE feel on a daily basis.
I truly appreciated Jonny having the untranslated Spanish interspersed through the book. Having this in the book helped me to have a sense of what it is to live somewhere when you don’t speak the language fluently.
This is Jonny’s second book and the second time I’ve given their book a five star rating. I highly recommend this book to be read by everyone. It will help check your privilege for those with it, and help you “walk a mile” in the shoes that millions of people face each day.
