This is a fascinating story about two rival mages in a secret society in modern day Boston. David and Rhys have history, but now Rhys is married to Moira and David and Rhys can’t stand each other. But when a lethal family curse starts to slowly kill David Rhys and Moira can’t just stand aside and watch him burn out in flames. This book has a great mix of political intrigue, mysterious curse breaking, complex romantic and friendship dynamics.
Favorite Parts - I appreciated seeing characters supporting each other and the way each person’s family backgrounds and influences shaped them. I also really love when you get to see an all-powerful character breaking down and finding out the secret hurts they’ve been concealing. This book wasn’t what I initially expected and I love the way it carefully developed relationships between Moira, David, and Rhys separately and together. Good stuff! And it’s the first in a series, I will definitely be picking up the next book!
