I feel like this book was a missed opportunity. A lot of her points were valid. However I think a lot of the potential audience was probably turned off in the first chapter when she used Jesus’ name as a curse with another vulgarity between the two names. There is definitely a place for tearing down the religiosity and pretending in the (especially middle class suburban white) church and being real and authentic. But the Bible does call us to strive towards holiness and clearly tells us not to take the name of the Lord in vain. Throughout the book I think the strong message is that all missionaries are weird people with savior complexes swooping in to save the poor needy foreign country without seeing them as people and also mooching off the church to do it. There are no stories of anyone doing it “right” and apparently she sees no place for foreign missionaries nor anyone who genuinely cares about the people they work with, nor any valid missions. Really disappointing.
