Dating & Other Hobbies
by Cat Hepburn
Dating & Other Hobbies is a collection of female-centred poetry and short stories that focus on love and lust, dating in the digital age and more. This collection is funny and raw and many elements I related to as a millennial, given the focus on millenial culture.
The poems are witty and punchy and I liked the rhythm. I really felt like it was easy to get the meaning of this poetry, probably because of the focus on millenial culture. There was a real range of themes in here from online dating, to one-night stands, toxic masculinity, patriarchy, social media pressures, self-image pressures, love, lust and more. I enjoyed the fluid approach to sexuality and the openness about sex and relationships.
The short stories were equally enjoyable and along similiar lines to the poems and they all interwined nicely. The collection is split into four chapters: digital, casual, wanting and missing and I will enjoyed the focus of each poem around the themes.
Some of my favourite poems from the collection were 'Mistakes of a Twenty-something Millenial', Circle of Shame', 'Cereal Dater' and 'Some Girls' and the short story 'Water Sign'.
I certainly don't think this is a book for everybody, but I think it will particularly resonate with a lot of British millenials and those that enjoy a critique of all the messy elements of dating. I absolutely devoured the collection. One of my favourite poetry collections to date for sure!
