Any Man
by Amber Tamblyn
With a satirical bent and a similar attitude and role reversal as Naomi Alderman’s [b:The Power|29751398|The Power|Naomi Alderman|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1462814013s/29751398.jpg|50108451], Amber Tamblyn’s poetic debut novel proved to be a cutting commentary on society’s present approach to female victims of sexual assault. In the book a serial FEMALE rapist is causing a chaotic media storm as 6 men in the Northeast are allegedly lured into lurid situations with a bizarre woman named Maude. Down to the accusations blurred by bystanders questioning why a married father of two would be out at night drinking heavily without his wife and the speculation that it’s not possible for a man to be raped because he’d been physically aroused and thus part of a consensual act— the whole thing reads like a biting critique on our ridiculous victim-blaming culture. The play with format lent itself well to the story as it zooms in and out of each man and included chat room dialogue, tweets, emails and transcripts from a tv show. Overall it was a very smart, well-planned and creative leap for Tamblyn and I’m hoping she creates another equally intriguing novel soon. Her voice is one that will leave quite the impact.
