The Old Drift by Namwali Serpell
4.0

I normally stray away from longer novels, multi-generational family sagas, historical fiction, science fiction, and love triangles, but I loved this.

I knew going into it that there would be a lot of backstories (the grandmothers/mothers) and there wouldn’t be a cohesive story until the last third of the book (the children) but I was pleasantly surprised by how engaging and interesting the first 6 chapters/characters were. Although it wasn’t clear how they intertwined at the time, they each could stand on their own and did not weigh down the larger story with excessive detail.

I continue to be amazed that this is a debut. Everything is woven together so perfectly, the characters' stories are easy to follow while still giving you plenty of clues to figure out how everything ties together. Although the plot of the final/actual story was short and relatively simple, it continues to provoke a lot of thought and the layers continue to reveal themselves. The seamless transition from historical to science fiction was also pretty impressive.

The audiobook narrators were top-notch as well.
