Look, I am trying to be a poetry girly, but I don’t think I’ve found the one for me yet. This won’t be my last attempt at it though! 

 

I love Emezi’s YA work (Pet and Bitter were in my top reads from last year!), but sadly I just didn’t vibe with their poetry collection. There’s an interesting layer of religious references throughout (Mary Magdalene, Samson and Delilah, even Jesus himself) that was titillating but altogether felt rather disjointed. 

 

Despite this not working for me, I look forward to reading more of Emezi’s other work!
